She spoke to her parents about her dream of having an acting career. After becoming proficient in dancing and modeling, she wanted to learn acting. Therefore, she began taking acting lessons in Toronto. After securing a few commercials as well as guest roles on the television show Mitchell was able to get her breakthrough when she was cast to play the role of Emily Fields in Pretty Little Liars. The acting abilities of Mitchell were highly praised by both fans and critics. Then she went on to make a mark on the screen, by starring in films like Dreamland, Mother's Day and The Possession of Hannah Grace. The Psychological thriller You, in which she was a part of, earned the film more attention. Shay Mitchell's writing talents aren't limited to acting. Together with Michaela Blney she wrote an adult novel titled Bliss.
